All of this year’s nursing graduates have passed the national licensure exam for registered nurses on the first try.

All 42 of the FLCC nursing graduates who took the national exam for registered nurses this year have passed.

FLCC’s 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) was reported by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing earlier this month. FLCC’s rate was above the combined statewide average of 89 percent for associate and bachelor’s degree graduates and the combined national average of 92 percent.

Pass rates in the Rochester region for both types of degrees ranged from 87 to 100 percent. In addition to FLCC, Monroe Community College also had a 100 percent pass rate.

FLCC offers an associate degree in nursing, which can be completed with two years of full-time study.

“This is a true testament that the hard work everyone puts in every day is paying off. This was the first cohort to graduate from the new curriculum and supports all the excellent changes we have been working to make here,” said Shayna Turner-Johnson, chair of the FLCC Nursing Department.

FLCC updated its curriculum in 2022 to focus on clinical judgment, a key component of the exam. The Nursing Department has also incorporated more elements to reinforce learning, such as recorded lectures students can revisit, online quizzes and discussions, and professional tutors. It also hired a study and test-taking coach.

The college expanded its nursing facilities by opening the Sands Family Center for Allied Health in fall 2022. In January 2023, FLCC began accepting new students twice each year. The first mid-year class will graduate this December.

In a related development, the college also launched a one-year licensed practical nursing (LPN) program this fall.
